I was fortunate to receive a review copy from this author. A physical copy no less. Anytime a writer creates an alternate reality, he or she gets to make the rules. Up until now, most stories of this nature (Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, Laurell K. Hamilton, etc.)have been demographically skewed to the female reader. Don't get me wrong, I have been an avid reader of all three. But many of the stories are heavy in the "paranormal romance" department. "Weeyatches" by Patrick Macadoo is far more gritty and raw. This story reads almost like a classic buddy cop story with danger and villains coming from a more supernatural angle. (All I will say is "sewer zombies" (blech!). I will give away no spoilers here, but I will say there are some wonderful surprises. Also, this book lends itself to be the launchpad of a series. (Hint, hint!)

On the critical side. There were moments when the story seemed to leap to points without purpose early on. (The meeting with Daphne and her rat of a dog aptly named Snookie goes wrong in a flash and I re-read that scene a few times to see if I missed something.) There are parts in a few of the action sequences that felt like Mr. Macadoo was writing faster than the words could come out and so it gets jumbled. Still, this is a fairly clean book, kudos to Naomi Clark.

I enjoyed the action and the three-dimensional (and flawed...which made them even more real) characters. If you want some strong female character types, this is a good choice. The central characters are strong but not men written as women if that makes sense.
