All good things must come to an end...

Welcome to the newest edition of "Short Attention Span Theater" or...as you have come to know it, the 30 minute reader. I have been reading Children of the Plague by Gregory Carrico. I admit that I cheated. I picked it up a few times for some unscheduled reading. And so, it is my duty to inform you that I will be wrapping up here.

So, what do you need to know...for one, how can I begin to express how honored I felt to be mentioned in this book...so to speak.

"Zombies," she muttered. "Pete said there were zombies. We're in a Todd Brown novel, aren't we?"

I'm not gonna lie...that felt super groovy. Now, you might think that such a thing could cloud my judgement when it comes to offering an unbiased review. Yeah...maybe. However, take what you will from this and base it on some of the previous reviews that I have written.

Here is what I took away from this book...

First thing is that I love it when somebody takes an established genre like zombies and goes their own way with it. There is as much science fiction as horror going on here and it works very well. As you know, I do not offer spoilers, I think you should be able to discover the twists, turns, and icky moments on your own. Just know that there is a very cool vibe and twist on the standard post-apocalyptic tale here that you won't regret discovering. Also, kudos on the strong female characters here.

Gregory does not "dumb" down his story. And I could be mistaken, but there is a noticeable lack of profanity which makes this a title that you can put in front of your younger house members and introduce them to some cool horror without all the cliches of gutter-speak that some might find offensive. Yes, it is still horror, but I can not explain it any more than to say it is handled in a way that opens itself up to young audiences as well as old.

I look forward to whatever Gregory has next and make this suggestion...get this book.

  1. hahaha! well your review was such before that I picked this little nugget of wonderful up. As for being mentioned.... I can only say its a weird experience, but if a novel is shite, then oh hell ya in it aswell which makes it uber awful!

    1. Lol, Good point, Vix! I thought of that, too. I had visions of an Todd demanding that I remove his name or he'd send Vinny after me. Whew!

  2. Good thing this one is such fun. And I am sure that Gregory will be happy to know that he has landed on the Vix radar scope...no better fan in the world in my opinion. Win Vix over and you will find no stronger supporter.

  3. I thought this was a great read and can't wait for the next one. And yeah - I thought it was pretty cool when I saw that line about being in one of your novels. :-)

  4. Thanks Todd. I'm really honored you chose this as your inaugural 30 minute reader book. To be honest, I was a bit worried since this is pre-launch, and it's going through the final polish from a less comma-happy editor at this very moment ;-).

I hope it didn't detract from your reading experience, and I'm glad you had fun with it.

BTW, my Thirty Minute Reader post on That Ghoul Ava and Forever Road is done and will be up tomorrow morning. I had to own up to cheating in mine, too. Ha!

Ten more days of playing nurse/house elf, and I'll be able to stick to a real blogging schedule! Well, in theory...

    Cheers, and thanks again!

    1. It was a pleasure, and I have already talked your book up with an avid reader on the treadmill at my gym.

As for the rest, I already knew that you were still polishing this baby up, so I hope I was helpful. I look forward to your next book. I have not read anything of yours yet that I did not enjoy.
