Welcome to Monday. I am writing this before the Seattle Seahawks vs. Atlanta Falcons game because I will either be very sad, or absolutely freakin' amazed that my Hawks pulled one out against the team that I picked at the beginning of the year to win it all.
So, lately, I have returned to a little hobby of mine that I used to have long ago. Collecting. I still have an epic sports card collection, though some of it has been lost over time. (And don't even get me started on the horror story of what my mother threw out from my youth.) I have lava lamps and all sorts of things.
Lately, I have been on a crusade to replace my KISS collection. I am pretty simple in the world of gifts. Denise knows that if it has to do with zombies or KISS...it is a slam dunk. Why complicate things? However...lately I have begun my search for something else to line my shelves with...
Yep...my love for all thing British has spilled over to my "Action Figures". DR. WHO!!!
I am pretty sure there is an ocean of figures when it comes to the good Doctor. I have some Dr. Who stuff...my TARDIS coffee mug and bathrobe for example. But until Jenifer's boyfriend got me the groovy little bobble TARDIS for Christmas, I didn't really have anything in the "figures" department.
Don't get me wrong...I am still filling far too much space with my KISS stuff...shot glasses, pint glasses, Pez dispensers, Mr. Potato Heads and bobbles...but I am led to believe that their is a galaxy of Dr. Who stuff floating around in the universe. I need to sell more books...and get a bigger house.
What does all of this have to do with anything? Nada. But it's Monday. Why start the week off so serious? I bet some of you out there have some fairly groovy hobbies. I would even be willing to wager that some of you collect stuff. Isn't it funny how something catches our eye and we become fixated? So, what is your guilty pleasure? Or what do you collect that makes your spouse just shake their head and look at you with that expression that says, "I don't get it...but if it makes you happy then whatever."?
Uh, yeah. For me, it used to be guns.
ReplyDeleteAs a Deputy Sheriff an avid competition shooter, I used to collect them and bought many as 'investments'. My wife finally asked me "Why so many?"
I said, "Why not? You never know when the zombies may come!"
"But you can't carry that many with you. Have you even shot this one? Or that one? Or...this one is still boxed!"
In extreme horror I replied, "NO! They'd lose their value."
Then hard times hit and I was forced to sell them. One by one, the collection I had hand picked, selected only the best of the best was sold off, usually at huge losses to cover one bill or another until I was left with hardly nothing. Most went unfired to protect their value >insert sarcastic laugh here<.
Since that time I've learned that the only thing of value worth 'collecting' has heartbeats, gives hugs and says 'I love you' or puppy kisses and pees in the floor...sometimes both...>insert heartfelt sigh here<
Well, here is hoping to better times and maybe a new gun for Christmas. But you have the right attitude with your take on "true" value.
DeleteBooks!!! I love reading, I love turning pages, and I love needing my Marylin Monroe bookmark. But because my husband doesn't "get it" he bought me a Kindle Fire. I had resolved that I would hate it...but because of its amazing ability to be so convenient I really do love it. And it's also how I was introduced to your work Mr. Brown, and will forever be indebted to my husband for that. I will continue to purchase books for my shelves because one day I will have the library of my dreams, and it will need to be filled with zombies, who done its, and love stories...but mostly zombies. I wonder if there are any zombified KISS figurines??? D Walker
ReplyDeleteZombie KISS figures!? How has Gene Simmons NOT thought of this? As for your enjoyment and reading my stuff...I offer my sincere thanks. (These are the times where words fail a writer...when truly trying to share what each reader means.)
