Do you really want a zombie apocalypse? I doubt it.

Book 11, DEAD: Blood & Betrayal is now out for the masses. This is the book that sets up the finale, DEAD: End which is due out this October. I will freely admit that this entry is about the length of DEAD: Revelations--up to this point, the shortest of my DEAD novels. Still a decent length, but not nearly as epic as DEAD: Spring which came in at over 125,000 words. (Novel length is considered anything over 50,000 which is around where most of my Ava books fall.) I always try to get around 100,000 words per book. I just feel that is a good number and very respectable considering some of the offerings out there. I don't pad my pages with large print or 1.5 spacing between lines. All that said, I anticipate the finale to be the biggest book of the series. I have visions of hitting the 200K word mark, but that will remain to be seen.

I hope that you enjoy this latest offering, and I look forward eagerly to your reviews. For me, that is perhaps as exciting as turning to that first page in a new book is for you.

Now, to the meat of today's post.

We all love the zombie genre. And many times I have been pulled in to the "what if" conversation. Honestly, I think it would be far worse than anything I can put on paper. If people think that I push the edges of human depravity on paper, then imagine the absolute elimination of law and order. I often get attacked for depicting certain things. (I still get hate mail and even a few death threats about Garrett--despite there not being ONE graphic scene written between Garrett and Kirsten.) But I did not invent this stuff. Watch the news...read a history book.

The wife and I were watching Outlander the other day when a scene came on that was quite unsavory. We joked about how that exact same scene would garner me a whole new batch of hate if it appeared in my books. Game of Thrones is simply brimming with such things, but I am getting off topic.

The truth is that society is fragile. Giving any person absolute power is dangerous. Abuse is a very common human trait. Without fear of reprisal or punishment, lines are blurred. I don't and won't get drawn into any sort of feminism argument. Women are very capable, but they are seldom a physical match for their male counterparts. I have one female friend who says very openly that she knows she would not last a week and would willingly rely on some of her male friends for her safety and well-being.

When it all comes down to it, the zombie apocalypse would be horrific. Sanitation? Gone. And I doubt the first waves of looters would be stealing toothpaste and toothbrushes. We would be filthy and miserable. It would be the camping trip from hell to the zillionth power. Once the grid fell, say goodbye to warmth and comfort. Oh, and add in all those pesky zombies trying to eat your face.

I love what I do for a living. I get to bring people into a world where the dead walk. It is fiction. Sometimes there can be a few nasty moments. But that is where I want it to stay...in the pages of a book.

My new (first) tattoo!

Don't care what anybody says...all time greatest!
So, I have gone 47 years without a tattoo. Yep. That includes my six years in the Navy and having done time...yet, not a single dot of ink has ever marred my (hairy) flesh. I recently revealed that I was getting my first. The issue that I had was in knowing that this was FOREVER

So, me being me, I did my research on the local shops. That leads me to this little side note: as an indie writer (and proud of it!), I am very big about supporting the local business. Sure, I can save a few cents at a box store, but I have learned that the local proprietors often make up in price with service and "little extras" that you NEVER find in a chain store.

Armed with my information, I hit the three parlors that are within 3 miles of my home. I had already numbered them by my liklihood of selecting them, but chose to visit them third choice first, first choice second, and second choice third.

The third choice had a lot of reviews complaining about punctuality. I arrived 30 minutes after they opened...and found the place empty. (As in nobody had shown up to open yet!) Okay...scratch them. Then I went to my first choice. Star Tattoo in Milwaukie, Oregon. The store is owned and operated by one guy: Draygon. The first person we met was his mom...who rocks a lot of her son's work. (She is getting a full back piece done currently.)

I told him what I wanted and he said he would be happy to draw up a piece and then we could go from there once I was happy with the artwork. He told me ahead of time that this would not be a hasty process since he is the only artist and employee of his shop. He made that point again as he got to know me better and figured out how anxious I was about having this done.

After two hours of talking with this man, I was sold. However, he actually insisted that I finish my search. I did, but the final stop reminded me of what a tattoo parlor would be like if they started becoming mall franchises. The mood just did not work for me. So...Star Tattoo it would be!

The Shawn Conn logo...love it!
Since I have been a KISS fan forever, I knew that my all-time favorite guitarist had to be part of the tattoo. Also, there is this whole "zombie" thing that I still have not outgrown. Our cover artist, +Shawn Conn created an amazing logo that will always be the logo for my DEAD series (see above).

Denise got a ladybug symbolizing Ronni
I gave the art to Draygon and waited. It took a couple of weeks (remember that early warning?), but at last he was ready to show me something. I was hooked the second that I saw it. So, we scheduled the date. Denise went in first for a ladybug tattoo. Draygon drew her one with the ladybug in flight which she loved. So he did hers first while I watched and they joked about my first time "under the needle".

The best one was that I would get the first dot, scream and flee the building sporting a single dot that I could boast was "picture of earth from very far away". Finally, it was my turn. So, he put down the tracing of the drawing. That didn't hurt a bit. Then I laid down on the table and  the real work began.

The work began and after making sure that I was going to be fine, Denise went home. As he worked, Draygon checked on me over and over, making sure that I was okay. There were actually a couple of times that he found a ticklish spot. (He said that was a new one in his 13+ years.) As the work progressed, we talked about all kinds of stuff...zombies, survivalism (he is big on this topic and it was fun to listen to his ideas). Eventually, it was time to stop.

Day one outline
Day one shading
Both Draygon and the missus commented on how blown away they were by the amount of time I submitted myself to on my first session ever. I have always had a high pain threshold, I guess it is higher than I realized. I was in thew chair for around 4 hours.

Draygon was great about wrapping up my arm and giving me all the instructions for care. He also told me about how the colors would "come in" after it healed. I was ready to schedule the next session. He repeated the part about needing to wait until it healed. But I was just so dang excited. I went home and followed all of his directions. I then discovered that I heal quickly. I went back a week later and the peeling was almost done already. He was stoked and scheduled the next session.

I went in on a Tuesday and he went to work. Once again, this guy is a blast to just talk with while he works. A few times, customers came and he was actually apologetic about having to stop so he could deal with them. Also, his mom stopped in and we visited for a few moments while he took care of scheduling some future appointments. At last, after another 3+ hours or so, he was finished. He noted a few times that this piece would be a three or four sitting event for most. I won't lie, it does start to burn and tingle at times...but it was not nearly as bad as I had been led to believe.

Right off the table
Again, he gave me instructions for proper care and told me that I should come in once it heals so he can get some pics for his book (I am his first zombie AND his first KISS piece!) and check for any touch ups that may be needed. Also, once again he reminded me about how the color would come in after it healed.

Two days later

Now, I will say that I am adamant that this is the only person I will ever let work on me. He has a customer for life. He is simply amazing, very personable, and also will not hustle the customer. I saw him explain very clearly to one person that walked in with a quote from another shop for a piece that they should take that offer because he could absolutely not match it.

I have my next four already planned and will probably go back this fall for number two. The next will again feature +Ace Frehley, but this time it will be a rendition of a concert shot with the word "Surrender" on the guitar neck. (That is a personal reference between me and the wife.) Also, Dyagon has said that if I am ever fortunate enough to meet Ace and get his autograph on my arm, he wil make it permanent.

A peek at a new vignette for Dead: Siege & Survival

One of my favorite parts of writing the DEAD series is the vignettes. These snapshots actually started as an idea to give global snapshots of a world in the grips of a zombie uprising. I had no idea that some of the most loved and hated characters would come out of these snippets. I can't begin to express how tickled I get when I receive an email quoting Juan. Some of these stories have grown beyond anything I anticipated. I will continue to write these vignettes as my own little guilty pleasure. What started as something I did as a lark has become an integral part of this DEAD world. It is with pleasure that I offer up this little peek at the newest vignette story line.

Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK—Victoria Kirkpatrick, Vix to her mates, set the shovel down and stared out across the lightly snow-covered grounds. A few months ago, there had been thirty-seven of them hiding out in the Audleys Wood Hotel. Now there were seven, and she didn’t think any of them would make it through the next few weeks.
She blamed Nigel Longstreet and that vile little rat-faced woman, Claudia Jones. Kneeling beside the mound of dirt she had been working at busily since just before dawn, Victoria fought back the tears that had been threatening to spill all night and into the morning.
“You stupid, wonderful man,” she whispered.
Her husband was underneath all of the cold earth she knelt beside now. And it was all Nigel’s fault. He had been the one to insist that they venture in to town for supplies. She had argued, saying that the city was thick with the walking dead and their best bet was to search the outlying areas. They would not find a concentrated amount of foods and such going house to house, but nobody had listened.
When volunteers were asked for, Ivor, her husband and the one thing she had known she could rely upon, had stepped forward. He and seven others set out with empty packs and three rolling carts that they pulled along using a shoulder harness. Ivor was the only one to return. He was empty handed…and covered in blood.
Nigel had flown into a fury about how “careless and foolish” Ivor had been in returning to their sanctuary. “Those monsters could be following you! You may have brought death to us all!”
Weak from blood loss and obviously in the final stages of the infection before he turned and became one of the undead, Ivor had enough energy and spirit left to land a punch with enough behind it to knock Nigel out cold.
The handful of survivors that remained all stood in silence for a moment, and then erupted in a very un-British display of emotion. The cheers and yells were a sign that Nigel’s reign as the self-proclaimed leader of the group had come to an end.
Claudia had stepped forward and looked as if she were going to strike Ivor from behind, but Victoria had moved in between the two. The women locked eyes for just a second. Obviously Claudia saw something that made her step back.
“If you touch him…I will kill you.” That was all Victoria said.
She had no idea that two more members of the group had stepped up behind her in support. Nobody could be sure if that had been what caused Claudia to backpedal and then flee the room, but the fact remained that she had, and Nigel had followed behind once he finally came to.
By that time, Ivor had succumbed to the infection and closed his eyes as a living person for the last time. Victoria had been at his side in their room when a long exhale rattled his once sturdy frame.
“Stupid lummox,” she said through the tears. Then, she drove a metal trowel through his forehead.
Despite the fact that it was still dark, she wrapped her husband and love of her life in the sheets and stitched the ends shut. After that, she dragged him down the hallway and out into the open grounds of the hotel.
A wave of nostalgia hit her as she stood under the glow of a full moon that was amplified by the light dusting of snow. This was the hotel he had taken her to the day he asked her to marry him. She knew something was up when they pulled into the main entrance of the luxurious hotel. Places like this were not usually to Ivor’s liking. He was more at home in a small pub with a few blokes, a full pint, and some chips. Even their dates up to this point had been out of the ordinary. She still remembered their first date. Ironically, it was to see the local American flag football team, the Zombie Horde, in action. She had the time of her life that evening being with a man who had encouraged her to just be herself and “the world be damned.”
Now, here she was, committing his remains to the ground. All because of the bastard Nigel. Nobody had listened to her. Of course, she blamed herself. She knew better. One of her passions before this whole nightmare began all those months ago was reading. Her favorite guilty pleasure was zombie fiction. Truthfully, her interest in the zombie was due to a misplaced assumption centered on that first date. The team name had been Zombie Horde. She mistakenly assumed Ivor was a fan of zombies; when in truth, he was addicted to American football in any form.
Still, she had read well over a hundred titles in that particular genre. One thing she felt qualified to give advice on was what to do and what not to do in this undead world. Sending a few of their people in to town was a monumentally bad idea.
When the first cases appeared in Basingstoke, she had been the on duty nurse at Parklands Hospital. She had been at the central nurse’s desk sipping at her tea and reading when the woman had stumbled through the doors. The front of her blouse was a crimson mess and she was clutching her neck with blood-slicked hands.
Before Victoria made it out from behind the desk, the woman had collapsed to the floor. Grabbing the phone, she had paged the emergency doctor and security. By the time she had pulled on rubber gloves and returned her attention to the down woman, she was back on her feet. Her head moving with jerky fits as she seemed to scan the room. When those eyes turned Victoria’s way, her body suffered a massive chill. They were covered in a milky film that was shot full of black tracers. When it opened its mouth and let loose with a low moan and began moving towards her with outstretched arms, she had no doubt what this was.
“Oh bloody hell,” was all she managed to utter.
She ran back behind her counter and looked for anything that might be used to defend herself. Finding nothing, she made a decision. Victoria ran out the fire exit. She saw a few dark shadows in the car park as she searched frantically for her own vehicle. That ride home had been terrifying. When she burst through the door, she found Ivor asleep in his favorite chair, television droning.
He hadn’t even questioned her when she woke him and told him what she witnessed. The next several weeks were a blur. She had refused to seek shelter in one of the locations mentioned on the telly, telling her husband that those places never fared well in her books. It proved true as each of those locations fell in the first few days.
With a few friends and neighbors, they had done okay for a while. Then they met up with Nigel’s bunch and joined forces. At first, things had been okay, but soon, it became clear that Nigel was set on being the leader. Since he had the only gun—a fact that he never was quite clear on how it had ended up in his possession since it was a Glock 17 in a harness that had police markings, but it was clear that this man had absolutely no ties to law enforcement.
Eventually, the suggestion was made to check out the Audleys Wood Hotel. Practically empty, the place had been easily cleared out. It was fortified and its secluded location was very helpful as they hastily erected a barricade around the central grounds. That was the first, last, and only suggestion of hers that had been heeded.
Looking up into the gray sky, the first few flakes of a new snow were drifting on the morning breeze. Victoria rose to her feet, wiping what she vowed to be her last tears from her eyes, she returned inside. Things were going to change…she owed Ivor that much.

I hope you enjoyed this raw form of the newest vignette.

Camp NaNoWriMo...and "Oh, the HORROR!"

Today starts my quest to write book 5 (wow...already on book 5!) in the DEAD series. This one is titled Dead: Siege& Survival and might give Dead: Winter a run for its money in the realm of dark. I will start warning people now...there will be some VERY unpleasant moments ahead for some of the characters as winter tightens its grip on a world overrun by the undead. The complete lack of infrastructure is something not to be taken lightly. I won't give away too much here, but I have been doing my research on things like hypothermia and The Donner Party. Stay tuned...this will be THE ONLY place you will find some raw excerpts.

In other news...I have a special offer. Anybody who comments on today's post and says "PICK ME!" will be thrown into a random drawing to be a guest character in my DEAD world. I will even let you choose the role of hero or villain. You will have no say in how your "namesake" is depicted or how long he or she will live. However, if you want to see your doppelganger appear in the pages of Dead: Siege & Survival...now is your chance. You must respond today (August 1, 2012) because I will be writing the Geek story today and "you" will be included in the  Vignettes section.

I would like to apologize for that horrifying image. I did warn you that it would be part of today's post. Kinda like a car accident that you can't look away from isn't it? Yes, after suffering a serious knee injury that I do not have the insurance to take care of, I sat around and gained almost 55 pounds. That is NOT okay. SO, knee injury or not...I have committed myself to returning to the P90X program. While I will probably not be super strict on the dietary part...I will be changing my eating habits considerably.

After day one (Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X) I can say that I am in terrible shape. I have ballooned up to 259 pounds and here were my numbers. (For those not familiar, you do 2 rounds of every exercise):
Standard Push Ups: 18/12  Wide Front Pull-Ups: 4/3  Military Push-Ups: 12/7 Reverse Grip Chin-Ups: 3/2 Wide Fly Push Ups: 16/11 Closed Grip Overhand Pull-ups: 3/2 Decline Push Ups: 12/7 Heavy Pants: 12 reps 17#/10 reps 17# Diamond Push Ups: 5/4 Lawnmowers: 12 reps 17#/12 reps 17# Dive-Bomber Push-ups: 6/5 Back Flys: 10 reps 17#/10reps 17#. Ab Ripper: 10 reps (of 25 for the full program).

I give huge credit to my wife, Denise, for stepping up and joining me. I will not post her numbers because those are her business. I am posting mine because the "shame factor" will hopefully motivate me. From having a 315# flat bench, 225# incline, and to hit 400# squats and deadlifts for reps of 20...to this. It is just not something I am very happy about. I won't bore you with all the workout details...but I will post the occasional update and I hope my friends will chime in with their support from time to time.

Aoife, my Border Collie, is very supportive...plus, I am like her own personal salt lick. The only time it gets a bit tricky is when she wriggles underneath me during push ups and tries to lick my face. So, that brings me to today's Olympic challenge...this one is easy. Do a cartwheel. Now imagine doing it on a balance beam. What a great performance by the women's gymnastics team!

Tomorrow, D.B .Tarpley will helm the ship and I will announce my Day 1 word count. Don't miss it.

Stuff about what I do every day...

Every morning at around five, I wake up to my Border Collie wriggling up my chest and licking my face. That is Aoife's way of letting me know that it is time to get my butt out of bed. So, after watering my tomato plants and feeding my fish, and taking the dogs out with Denise, I settle in at my desk. April of this year (2012) I left my "day" job to devote my full attention to writing and editing. I found out just how far behind I had fallen these past few months as I can not seem to dig out from under all of the editing projects and get in some quality writing time. I am pleased to say that I am almost at a point where I can breathe.

Next month, I will be immersed in the August edition of Camp NaNoWriMo. For those not familiar, that is where you set out to write 50,000 words in a month (or 1,666 words a day). I will be using this time to get deep into the fifth book in the DEAD series, titled Dead: Siege & Survival. I looked at my writing calendar and decided that was my priority. Oh yeah...I got a few other stories in the pipeline. "Such as?" Thanks for asking. I am cleaning up Zomblog: Snoe for the October release. (That is book four of the Zomblog series for those keeping track.) I have the second Gruesomely Grimm Zombie Tales book where I will take on the next 20-30 of the 200+ stories attributed to the Brothers Grimm. I am committing to the second book in my non-horror Dakota series. Last, but not least, I will be making a go at writing a full-length offering for my That Ghoul Ava horror/comedy. All the while, I am dipping my toe in the blogosphere (thanks for visiting by the way). All that and I haven't even mentioned my editing jobs or my quest to reach the top 1,000 as an Amazon reviewer (as of July 19, 2012 I am ranked 3,233) and make regular posts on Brutally Honest Reviews. Yep...I am a busy guy.

Some might say I have too much on my plate. Others may worry that I may get sloppy. THAT is the problem. What you are not seeing on my list is spending hours each day skulking around Facebook. It's not that I don't think there is a certain degree of necessity when it comes to the social media, but hanging around in a bunch of rooms TALKING about all the work I have to do is not GETTING any of my actual work done. Thank goodness I have a wife who is very supportive and helpful. She reads various posts to me throughout the day. If I have an opinion that has not been hashed and re-hashed over and over again, I offer my two cents. Sometimes I just say hello to a few people that I really like. (If I try to list you all, I will leave somebody out, so...you know who you are.) I just don't have time to relive high school.

Yep. There went a few ruffled feathers. but seriously...take a step back. Pluck you feelings off your shoulder and put them in your pocket. Pop in to some of these rooms lately and tell me I am wrong. Gossip. Name-calling...and cliques! Don't even get me started on that topic. Too late! Room after room it is the same thing. "He said this" and "She said that". Honestly, I just got tired of hearing who pissed who off. Everybody is an expert, nobody can take criticism, and the "I got a bad review...WAAAAAAA!" I started getting numb. One day, I just said "I'm done." Did anybody notice? Not likely. Why? Because I still say hi to my friends. I still support writers I enjoy, I read and review several books a month. I just cut out the garbage. It was a waste of time. Now I work 12-15 hours a day and I have never been happier. I still have a few problems to iron out...and I have yet to crack the top 100 in SALES in the Kindle Horror market. I flirted with it early this month...but ran out of gas. But I know I will get there one day and see my name up there with some pretty cool names. (I'm looking at you Mark Tufo...you are my benchmark.)

I am not doing anything special. I am just not wasting time with things that are meaningless. And if you think I am coming off snobbish, then you aren't paying attention. I still like all the people I liked before. I just don't get into the drama. And you KNOW there is a lot of drama lately. I don't need to name names...each of you can probably think of a half dozen on your own...some will be the same for many of you...others not. Instead, I have committed myself to READING. I decided it was time to support all these people I have cultivated relations with. And my TBR list is epic: Armand, Billie Sue, (the aforementioned) Mark Tufo, Jeff Dawson (thanks for the tee-shirt, Jeff!) and too many others to list. THAT is my new social media. Book reviews. Next, I will talk about how book reviews are way better than LOLing. Tune in.

Why would you want to write for a living? (Part 4)

I've met and spoken with a number of writers who mourn the lack of family support. I hear them vent in frustration about how nobody--neither friends nor family--has so much as cracked a cover of even one of their stories. I can certainly understand their frustration and even hurt feelings. However, let me just take one moment to remind you that your family is NOT your target audience! I understand that you want those close to you to see just how amazingly talented you happen to be...but they are not ever going to BUY one of your books.

Now that I have spewed my hypocritical line of drivel...let me remind you that it was lack of support that drove me away from my dream time and again. The real truth is that we (referring to us writing types) are a very selfish bunch. Our pursuit of being a writer takes up far more time than most people realize (unless they are married to or in a relationship with a writer). It is not something that can normally be considered a couples, team. or group effort. It is a solitary effort that demands ALL of our focus. We shut out those same friends and family members who we later ask to read our latest piece. That is sorta like bringing home a girlfriend (or boyfriend) and asking your wife (or husband) to fix dinner for the three of you.

Our job requires that we try to find ways to make strangers interested in our wares. While we may make claims like "I don't write for the money." If you are trying to make a living at being a writer...that is a HUGE contradiction. I will admit here to all who care to read this that I am absolutely in this to make a living. I will sell out in a Florida Flash. I have a family to support. Last I checked, the electric company does not accept a pat on the back in lieu of payment. They want cash. Therefore...I need my books to sell.

This brings me back to where I left off yesterday: Zomblog. I finally had somebody who supported me once again. This time, she was willing to do more than just give me the green light. I need to make it clear that I NEVER intended for Zomblog to see print. It was a warm-up exercise as I got in shape to write my DEAD series. I actually wrote it day-by-day. When I felt I was ready to move on to my "real" novel, I wrapped it up. All the while, Denise was posting it in daily installments. It gained a bit of a following, including a small press. An offer was made to me to compile the entries and release it as a novel. I was blown away. I may have sprained my tongue saying "Yes!" so fast. Just before it was due to be released, the publisher wanted to change the contract. In short....more money for them and less for me. My response is not suitable for family viewing, but you get the point. I said "No thanks."

Just as fast as it had begun, the ride was coming to an end. kinda like an amusement park. You stand in line for three hours to ride a seventy second roller coaster. I was disappointed, but not devastated. After all, the DEAD series was my focus. However, Denise was not satisfied with that outcome. My wife (who happens to hold a Masters in accounting and business) filed all the paperwork and created a company using the copyright tag I used for my writing--May December Publications. I have used that dating back to when I wrote Dakota. My daughter Ronni was born on December 15th, my son Cody was born on May 30th, and my son Alexander was born on December 13th...hence, May December Publications, LLC. It was under that label that Denise had Zomblog printed. I received it for Christmas 2009. When you get a book sent in to you in prison, it is always neat...when it is YOUR book...it is inexplicably cool.

Having somebody in your life who not only understands, but actively supports your dream of being a writer is a treat. It is a luxury that I do not take for granted. My first several books, (the first two DEAD books, the first two Zomblog books, and Gruesomely Grimm Zombie Tales Volume 1) were handwritten by me, then sent home and typed by Denise. After several back and forth mailings and numerous edits over the phone, those books saw daylight. So...the truth is that none of that would have happened when it did had it not been for such amazing support.

So, the books started becoming available. The first month of release, I think Zomblog sold six copies. Disappointed does not quite cover it. The rush and the thrill of holding a physical copy of my book was quickly deflated by the reality of next to no sales. It was time to delve into the seedy underbelly of the writing world--the part none of us likes to talk about. Promotion. There is a fine line between promoting and being a nuisance. Also, just as I sat down to start on Dead: The Ugly Beginning, a letter came in and asked when the next book in the Zomblog series was going to be released. What next book? Crap...this was gonna be a bit harder than I thought.
